Harold Ore Oelkers 1/15/1932 - 3/27/2012
Harold O. Oelkers, 80, of Pine Island, formerly of Mazeppa died Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at the Kenyon Sunset Home. The memorial service will be Saturday, March 31, 2012 at 11:00 AM at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mazeppa with Reverend Alan Horn officiating. Burial will be at the Mazeppa Cemetery with military honors provided by the Mazeppa Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be on Friday, March 30, 2012 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Mahn Family Funeral Home- Larson Chapel and on Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Harold Ore Oelkers was born on January 15, 1932, in Pine Island Township, Goodhue County, MN to Ore and Johanna (Buck) Oelkers. He grew up in Mazeppa and graduated from Mazeppa High School in 1950. Harold worked at his father’s grocery store while he was in high school and owned his own milk route prior to entering the U.S. Army on August 13, 1952. While home on leave he married, Clarice Lemmerman on December 26, 1952 in Mazeppa. After his honorable discharge on May 29, 1954, they made their home in Mazeppa and he worked for Quarve-Anderson for several years. Harold bought his milk route back and later worked as a grocery clerk. From 1970-1980 he owned and operated Harold’s Rubbish Removal. Harold was one of the original collectors of aluminum cans in the Mazeppa area. Harold and Clarice moved to Pine Island in 1993 and into the Kenyon Sunset Home in 2010. Harold was a retired lifelong member of the Mazeppa Volunteer Fire Department and also a member of American Legion Post #588 in Mazeppa and VFW Post #1802 in Zumbro Falls. Harold enjoyed collecting coins and cast iron toys, watching “Days of Our Lives”, swimming, traveling and listening to old time music.
Harold is survived by his wife, Clarice; daughters, Brenda (Mike) Schultz and Sara (Roger) Markham, both of Mazeppa; grandchildren, Amanda (Joe) Tweed, Matthew (Jill) Markham and Todd Markham; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Haley and Jordon; sister, Kari Goodman of Minnetonka and many nieces and nephews.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Ore and Johanna; brother, Gary and nephew, Russell Goodman.
